How to Choose an Electric Provider

Choose an Electric ProviderAny time you turn on the television, it seems, you see an advertisement from an electric company. You obviously won’t have any shortage of options when the time comes to choose an electric provider – in fact, there are so many you could feel a bit overwhelmed. Whether you’re choosing on price alone or you want to go with a company that is committed to going green, there’s quite a bit you need to think about. Here are some of the key considerations to keep in mind that could help you make the right decision.

Older Isn’t Necessarily Better

Many people narrow their options because they believe the older providers are better. However, keep an open mind when you choose an electric provider. There are plenty of newer companies that deliver excellent, uninterrupted services. If someone tries to tell you that customers of those older companies receive service first when a widespread power outage takes place, don’t believe it. Oncor Electric Delivery maintains the transmission system; they – and they alone – decide whose power gets restored first.

Know the Terms

If you blindly pick one provider over another because it offers a much better deal, you could wind up making a very expensive mistake. “Read the fine print” is a cliche, but it’s true. For example, you need know whether the rate you’re signing up for is fixed or variable (more on this later). It would also help to know how much you’re currently paying per kilowatt hour so you can make the most well-informed decision possible.

Fixed or Variable Rates?

You can either play it safe and go with a fixed rate, or you can gamble a little bit and sign up for a variable rate. With a fixed rate, of course, you’ll know what you’ll be paying each month. With a variable rate, you may not be paying a lot now but then your bill could spike when you least expect it.

Most of all, though, take your time and do your homework when you choose an electric provider. The choice you make now will be with you for several months, so you obviously want to make the decision that’s right for you.
